Dr. Štěpán STEHLÍK

Institute of Physics of the CAS, Prague, Czech Republic, EU

Positions: Leader of the Group of Nanoparticles and Interfaces, Dep. of Semiconductors, Institute of Physics, CAS, Prague, the Czech Republic and Senior researcher at New Technologies Research Centre, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Dep. of Chemical Processes and Biomaterials, Pilsen, CZ

Specialization: Diamond nanoparticles, composites and CVD films.

At the NANOCON´25 conference Štěpán Stehlík will present the invited talk “Origin matters; fingerprints in nanodiamonds from different synthetic methods” at the Session A Nanomaterials for Electronic, Magnetic and Optic Applications, Carbon Nanostructures, Quantum Dots.

Personal Background and Education:

Dr. Štěpán Stehlík studied at the Faculty of Chemical Technology of University of Pardubice, the Czech Republic, where he graduated in Material Science in 2006 (MSc.) and received also his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry and Technology of Inorganic Materials in 2010. During his Ph.D. study he spent four-month research stay (in 2010) at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan, where he studied phase separation in silver-doped chalcogenide glasses by AFM and SIMS and its relationship to electric properties. During the postdoctoral period (2010-2015) at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Department of Thin Films and Nanostructures he spent one year at the Department of Physics of University of Basel, Switzerland (postdoctoral fellowship in September 2014 - August 2015) where he focused on microscopic electronic properties of diamond nanoparticles.

Since 2018 he is a leader of the Group of Nanoparticles and Interfaces at the Institute of Physics CAS and from September 2022 also the Senior researcher at the New Technologies Research Centre of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, at the Department of Chemical Processes and Biomaterials.

Research interests:

Štepán Stehlík's research interests are mainly related to surface chemical, colloidal, optoelectronic, and structural properties of diamonds (nanoparticles, CVD films, porous structures), interfaces of (nano)diamonds with other materials and living systems, composites with photoactive materials and biomaterials. In his work he is using a broad portfolio of characterization techniques such as SPM ambient techniques (AFM, KPFM, C-AFM), Electron microscopy, DLS, IR and Raman spectroscopy, Thermal Analysis, and SAXS.  In the scientific community, Štěpán Stehlík is known for his systematic work in the fields of structural stability of nanodiamonds at the nanoscale, surface chemistry, and the origin of their unusual colloidal properties. He and his colleagues also hold the world record for the highest nucleation density achieved on a silicon substrate and the thinnest continuous diamond layer grown.
