Prof. Dr. Silvia GIORDANI

Dublin City University, Ireland

Positions:

Full Professor Chair of Nanomaterials at the School of Chemical Sciences at Dublin City University, Ireland.

Specialization: Design, synthesis, and characterization of nanomaterials for applications in smart and responsive bio-related nanotechnologies.

At the NANOCON´25 conference Silvia Giordani will present her invited talk “Engineering Carbon Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications” in the Session C – Bionanotechnology, Nanomaterials in Medicine.

Personal Background and Education:

Silvia Giordani received her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Miami, USA and carried out postdoctoral research at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland and at the University of Trieste, Italy. In 2007 she received the prestigious President of Ireland Young Researcher Award and was a Research Assistant Professor at TCD from 2007 to 2013.

In September 2013 she founded the new Nano Carbon Materials” research lab at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), Genova, Italy and in December 2016 she was appointed Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry at the University of Turin, Italy. She acted as Head of School of Chemical Sciences at DCU from 2020 to 2023.

Research interests:

Silvia Giordani´s main research interests are in the design, synthesis, and characterization of a wide range of nanomaterials for applications in smart and responsive bio-related nanotechnologies. The research is highly multidisciplinary, since it conjugates competencies coming from different backgrounds, such as organic chemistry, chemical physics, materials engineering, pharmaceutical chemistry and biology.

The Giordani Group is focused on design, synthesis and functionalisation of carbon nanomaterials for biomedical (sensing, molecular imaging and drug delivery), energy and environmental applications.

Latest developments of the research group relate to synthesis of carbon dots from spent coffee grounds: transforming waste into potential biomedical tools.

Scientific Awards:

In 2012 she was awarded the LOréal UK & Ireland Fellowship for Women in Science and in 2014 she has been invited to give a Women in Science” Masterclass at the Royal Irish Academy.

In 2018 she was awarded the William Evans Fellowship from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and was a Visiting Scientist to the Bio-Nano Institute at Toyo University (Japan).

Summary of publication activity:

Author/co-author of 150 papers in international peer-reviewed journals; The number of total citations > 10.500 and H-index: 52 (Google Scholar, March 2025); ORCID ID .

She is Associate Editor for Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology and for Frontiers in Chemistry - Supramolecular Chemistry.
