Assoc. Prof. Dr. Stanisław WACŁAWEK

Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic, EU

Position: Head of the Environmental Chemistry Department, Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation (CXI), Technical University of Liberec (TUL), Czech Republic

Specialization: Materials for Water/Wastewater Treatment; Environmental Chemistry.

At the NANOCON´25 conference, Stanisław Wacławek will present the invited talk “Hybrid supramolecular nanomaterials for selective water decontamination” at Session B -Industrial and Environmental Applications of Nanomaterials.

Personal Background and Education:
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Stanisław Wacławek (*1987, Opole, Poland) studied at the University of Bielsko-Biala, Poland, where he received his MSc. in Environmental Engineering in 2012. Following four years he spent at the Technical University of Liberec studying Applied Sciences (Ph.D. degree in 2017).  He obtained his habilitation in Environmental Engineering (D.Sc.) at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, becoming an associate professor (at TUL) in 2022.
He was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cincinnati (US) and Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz (DE). He has completed a half-year internship at the SiREM/Geosyntec company and a two-month internship at the University of Guelph (Guelph, ON, Canada).
He is currently (from 2023) the head of the Environmental Chemistry (OECH) department at CXI, TUL. His department is involved in both basic and applied research projects and is composed of ~25 employees (6 senior researchers). Before from 2021, he was leading the Environmental Catalysis Group at CXI, TUL.

Research interests:
Stanisław Wacławek´s fields of interest are environmental nanomaterials, remediation techniques, and analytical chemistry. His work has significantly advanced the field of oxidation processes while also pioneering the use of nanomaterials modified with supramolecular compounds for the selective reduction of emerging contaminants. His long-term research has led to a breakthrough achievement—the first-ever low-temperature reduction of the perfluorooctanoate anion (PFOA) using modified elemental iron (Fe⁰), setting a new benchmark for sustainable remediation strategies.

Summary of publication activity:
Author and co-author of 150 publications in international peer-reviewed journals; The number of total citations >6.000 and H-index: 38 (Scopus, February 2025); ORCID ID
Among his many publications, the review paper "Chemistry of persulfates in water and wastewater treatment: a review" has gathered over 1300 citations on the Web of Science within several years. According to Scopus, he is in the top 2% of the most cited scientists in the world.

Other activities:
Stanisław Wacławek also serves as an associate editor of the Desalination and Water Treatment and Ecological Chemistry and Engineering S. He is also an Editorial Board Member of Chemical Engineering Journal and Catalysts journals.
He is also a member of the International Water Association (IWA) and the American Chemical Society (ACS).
